Welcome to another episode of "Endless Possibilities", where we delve into the nuts and bolts of the Tipton County School System. In this edition, we welcome special guest, Dr. Rebekah Byrd, an assistant superintendent in Tipton County and the Director of Instruction.
In today’s episode, we discuss Tipton County Schools summer programs. These summer programs include learning camps for rising kindergarteners through ninth graders, and credit recovery programs for high school students. A key change this year sees Brighton High and Brighton Middle Schools' summer programming delivered from Brighton Elementary due to restroom renovations.
We talk about the schedule of summer programs, kicking off a week after the Memorial Day holiday, with Elementary and Middle schools' programs running from June 3rd to 28th and high school credit recovery in the stretch of June 3rd-21st. The intriguing high school credit recovery program is dissected, unmasking its potential for students who need to make up for failed classes to secure much-needed credits.
Dr. Byrd breaks down the daily routines in each grade level. Elementary and middle school students can expect daily lessons for ELA and Math, physical activities, intervention, and ‘STREAM’ activities. STREAM, an acronym for science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math, integrates all these elements into fun, engaging, hands-on activities, breaking away from the traditional classroom setting.
Transportation will also be provided during the programs, with approximately 45 bus routes ready to shuttle elementary and middle school students; however, attendance confirmation is key to facilitate successful routing.
The last part of our conversation shines a light on a new law called the 'third grade retention law'. It specifically concerns third grade students who score at a level one or two in the ELA portion of TCAP, offering them summer camp as a pathway for promotion to fourth grade.
For any queries on summer schools, community members can reach out to the principal of their child's school zone. With smaller classroom sizes and an emphasis on hands-on learning, we encourage students to seize this opportunity for an elevated learning experience.
Tune in to this informative episode and gear up for the summer school session brimming with endless possibilities. Join us for another insightful conversation on our next episode.

On this episode of 'Endless Possibilities,' we delve deep into the world of standardized testing in Tipton County Schools. Our guest, Steve Maclin, Student Information and Accountability Supervisor, takes us through the ins and outs of the different state tests and how they're used to monitor student progress across different grade levels.
We discuss the implications of the testing season, which grade levels are involved and when it takes place. Maclin explains how different people, from students to teachers, administrators, and even government bodies, make use of the test results. He gives valuable insights as well into the controversial new law about using the English Language Arts test for third-graders to determine promotion or retention.
Maclin also shares effective strategies for families to help their children prepare for their exams, emphasizing the importance of sleep, breakfast, and being on time for their tests. He also emphasizes the importance of ACT testing for college-bound individuals, its impact on financial aid, and the preparation that Tipton county offers for it.
